Music Production using Digidesign® Pro Tools LE™

In this class students will be exposed to the knowledge that encompasses all the fundamental aspects of non-linear music production based around the “computer studio.” They will first grasp the theory behind digital audio and how it is used to capture real, live acoustic sound. Next they will learn the basics of tracking and piecing together a song idea in Pro Tools LE™Pro Tools™, along with file management strategies for organizing large amounts of sound files and edit files that will later be needed for mixing and mastering of a final project. Finally, students will discover standard production practices that include some instances of subjective decision making that will develop their ears to be able to hear not only the “big picture” of the song before it is even completed, but also be able to listen to music critically so as to sculpt it into something that is both professional and creatively stimulating to listen to.

Key Concepts to be covered:
  • What is Pro Tools? What is non-linear editing? Can I produce a piece of music entirely within my computer?
  • Sample rates, bit depth, and digital resolution
  • Recording mono sound sources, recording in stereo. Achieving good level and why it is important.
  • Using the toolbar in Pro Tools for basic editing and arranging of waveforms.
  • Using the mixing board window and understanding “virtual routing.”
  • What are plug-ins? DSP and real-time audio processing. What is compression? What is EQ? What is automation? What is reverb?
  • Mixing down to two-track and making a final master of a song.
